Provenance: European private collection The prototype for this painting is the portrait of General Pálffy by Giuseppe Maria Crespi held by the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen in Dresden (see Mira Pajes Merriman, Giuseppe Maria Crespi, Milano 1980, p. 290, tav. 194). Luigi Crespi was the son of Giuseppe Maria and he was active in his workshop. General Johann IV, Count Pálffy was commander of the Imperial army in Italy between 1699 and 1703. Il prototipo di quest’opera, è il Ritratto del generale Pálffy di Giuseppe Maria Crespi a Dresda, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen (cfr. Mira Pajes Merriman, Giuseppe Maria Crespi, Milano 1980, p. 290, tav. 194). Luigi, il secondogenito si forma nella bottega del padre (vede S. Evangelisti, Alcuni ritratti di Luigi Crespi, in “Paragone/Arte” n.32, 1981, 379, pp. 37–52). Il modello di questo ritratto verrà poi ricordato da Giuseppe Maria Crespi in un noto ritratto, Cancelliere Florius Senesius, Boston, Museum of Fine Art (cft. M. P. Merriman, Giuseppe Maria Crespi, Milano 1980, p. 290, tav. 195). Luigi Crespi fu abile nel ritrarre la società del suo tempo, dal Ritratto di una dama Bargellini, Bologna, Galleria Bargellini, al Ritratto della Principessa Ercolani, Cambridge, Fogg Art Museum. Il Generale Johann IV Pálffy fu in Italia tra il 1699 e il 1703 quale comandate dell’esercito imperiale. Successivamente il generale concluse la pace di Szatmar del 1711 e partecipò alla guerra Turca del 1716 e 1717. Il suo operato era così apprezzato che Maria Teresa lo chiamava “Padre”. La sua famiglia vanta una straordinaria fedeltà agli Asburgo.
